Compressor (vocals)

I'm recording with Sonar and I'm using Waves L2 compressor for my vocals. I really like the sound I'm getting, except. I would like to be able to record at a little hotter level without having to worry about clipping. Since I don't have an outboard compressor I have to really dial in my input level so I can record at a decent level, and not clip.

Vocal Tracking Levels.

I am wondering about the RMS and peaks levels I should be hitting when recording vocals. I've seemed to gather from different sources that I should be anywhere around -24 to -18 RMS with peaks no more than -10. I would just like to hear other people confirm or reject this idea. Once the track has been recorded into Logic, I can make any other level changes ITB.

microphones for vocals

if i was to choose a small hand full of decent vocal microphones for my new home project studio which ones should i get? under $500 is preferred. currently looking into the mxl v89 and the AKG 200.

i've recently understood that even a hot rodded vintage Neumann won't sound as good on say a certain female vocal than an mxl mic might. i understand it depends on so much.
