Best way to track slap bass

One problem I have is tracking slap bass, particularly bass tracks which are finger picked throughout with slap decorations. The slaps cause quick spikes. What are some recommended methods for getting a smooth yet dynamic sound out of slap bass tracks? How do guys like Marcus get such perfect balance between easy legato phrases and hard slaps without sounding squashed?

Thanks. 8-)

Rockabilly bass

I've been drafted to record a rockabilly band next month, but I've never recorded a live upright acoustic bass before. I've been shooting ideas around in my head, but haven't figured a good way to mic it. I want to run it in thirds (mic left panned hard left, mic right panned hard right, mic centered perfect stereo) but not sure what mics to use.

Does MaxxBass Have any business in the mastering chain?

Does MaxxBass Have any business in the mastering chain? If applied to all the low-end in a song, wouldn't it have a similar result as just boosting low EQ? Would this not just leave the low end as muddy as if you boosted all the low EQ. Should MaxxBass just be used in the mix?
