Working with a compressor on the master buss/aux

Hi guys,

We've already discussed what people put or don't put on their master bus while mixing.
I personnaly don't put anything and I'm use to kind of blind guessing what the mastering process will do to my mix.

To keep an open mind, I want to try to mix with a compressor on the master bus, just to see if my mix will be different or at least if it's gonna help me.

Sans comp ?

Jack White recently did a record all analog (Ampex440 - some recorded at 7.5 ips!). He had it mastered at Gateway asking Bob Ludwig to not use any compression. none . nanda. the record was mastered to vinyl with a different master for hi res digital.

what do you think of that?

i would love to hear some of your tracks where you turned off all the dynamics plugs.

Am I looking for a Compressor? Is that right?

I'm currently working on an 8 track project, and there are highs and lows throughout some parts.
Now, what can I do to even out the volume on all my tracks? Is it called Compressor? I believe I read something about Compressor
If so, what Compressors are easy to use, and does anybody have a step by step tutorial/explanation?

Thanks

Help me with an experiment (API 525 content)

I am going to undertake an experiment, and I need the help of knowledgeable people. In return, I will share my results freely in another thread for all to use. So if you contribute, you stand to gain something. Perhaps a perfect recreation of the API525, perhaps an imperfect one, but most assuredly, a new idea on how to achieve the sounds of your dreams.

how to build a brickwall limiter/maximizer with good compressors?

I don't own a good brickwall limiter/maximizer in my drawer of plugins. And I know I can get one for $29 from Waves. But I own Waves Renaissance Compressor and was wondering how to build one, if possible with a few compressors chained together or something. I was inspired to try brickwall limiting to my music by a couple of sources. I play bluegrass acoustic music.
