Description
An acronym for Digital Audio Workstation A digital audio workstation (DAW) is an electronic device or application software used for recording, editing and producing audio files. DAWs come in a wide variety of configurations from a single software program on a laptop, to an integrated stand-alone unit, all the way to a highly complex configuration of numerous components controlled by a central computer. Regardless of configuration, modern DAWs have a central interface that allows the user to alter and mix multiple recordings and tracks into a final produced piece.

Thoughts and questions on DAW recording.

Been cruising several sites and reading a lot discussion regarding keeping levels significantly below 0db to the tune of -15db peak verses something along the lines of -3db which is what I would have expected to be the norm.

Is this relating to Input levels? Playback levels? Output bus level? The idea is that higher levels introduce any number of issues. Can any one elaborate?

My new DAW

Hi everyone I'm new here, but not new to recording ive been digitaly recording since i had my old Pentium III computer and a simple computer mic.

Anyways Im buidling a new 64 bit computer for recording and i bought more stuff to add to my little home studio. Im gona be posting my new setup with pictures and all step by step on this little thread.

DAW setup questions

I've been looking into making a fairly serious home studio for myself. I plan on upgrading my computer to the 3Ghz range, a Gig of ram, and need help with choosing a sound card. I would like to have the capability to record multiple tracks simultaneously at 24bit 96khz, specifically for recording drums/percussion.

phantom power w/ daw

i was wanting to know if i have to record seperately with my condensers that require phantom power than with my dynamic mics that dont require it. my Mackie cfx16 board has one master phantom power switch and it seems like a bad idea to feed phantom power to my dynamics that dont require it. is this true or would i be fine having it on while mics that dont need it are plugged in?

Dim LCD screen on my DAW (is this too much a HW question?)

I know this is stretching it, but if so tell me and I'll delete it. (can I?).
I got a free virtuall unused LCD screen today for my mobile rackmount computer project. But (get what you pay for) it is too dI'm to really be of use. It is well lit, but I can barely make out the image on it. Just a lot of dI'm grey light.

My first PC/DAW build ..will these components work ?

I've never spec'd out a PC before.

I want a store to build a PC for my teen son - he's been playing electric guitar ( lessons ) for a couple of years now and he'd like to try recording to a PC.

Although good sound / recording is the priority it'll also be a multi - purpose PC ( some gaming, downloading etc. )
