Description
A digital audio workstation (DAW) is an electronic device or application software used for recording, editing and producing audio files. DAWs come in a wide variety of configurations from a single software program on a laptop, to an integrated stand-alone unit, all the way to a highly complex configuration of numerous components controlled by a central computer. Regardless of configuration, modern DAWs have a central interface that allows the user to alter and mix multiple recordings and tracks into a final produced piece.

Building my first DAW - Newbie Questions

This will be my first scratch build dedicated DAW. Ive searched around the forums but still have many questions - I'm sorry if these have been gone through before.

I do not need up to the minute performance - Im trying to do this on my college student budget. Something based around a P4 2 - 2.4 processor would be ideal. I have all the accessories, OS etc. - all I need is a box.

Striping SMPTE to DAW?

Quick question. (damn, I'm full of alliteration today)

My Ghost desk reads SMPTE and can automate mutes for a mix. A have used this feature before when tracking to tape in order to both sync the computer and do the mutes. I suddenly thought: why couldn't I strip code to a track in the computer when not hotting tape, and fire the mute automation with that?

Best DAW?

I am about to be in the market for a DAW I believe. Any suggestions? I was just trying to edit some drums on my Fostex VF-160 and I couldn't do what I needed to do. I was just trying to cut out a crappy fill and either replace it with another, or just graft a straight 4/4 back over it. I went into scrub zoom and when I set a mark, it would not cut on my mark!

daws and plugin nightmare

Hi friends!
This is more related with Pt users...
OS X is out there, Pt 6, PT H more popular, the Ilok...
We have to pay to upgrade to PT HD compatibility > but almost no plugs do 192k.
Now compatibility with PT 6... bugs, etc

How do ya guys are dealing with rhis?
I am quite happy with 5.1.1 on a mix system and plenty available plugs..
