What Gear To Go With

I'm fairly new to the whole recording thing. I'm wondering what stuff I need to start building a basic home set-up, and what brands to go with. I've been hearing from one end "Mackie is the best", and then oh "Mackie sucks go with Roland". If anybody has any experience (which I'm pretty sure there are a couple of people who do), please through some useful advice my way. Thanks.

Need help adding outboard gear (or plugins)

I recently purchased a Fostex MR8-HD to record some demo-quality material. Now, I believe the next step in making some of these recordings "decent" is to add some outboard gear (or plugins). Having very little knowledge I'd like to know some opinions on what to purchase first, and if I should purchase units that are "all-in-one". I haven't

anyone know any good places to rent gear, i'm really looking to rent a 3124 for a day, or two nice Neve pres for a band i'm recording an album for, just need it a day or so, i used to have a couple places bookmarked for when i would need to rent from those places but i've updated my pc since then,

Hey I'm posting this silly thread in rec.org because I'm quite happy of having my very first channel strip (Focusrite trakmaster)
the other reason i posted was because i was wondering if focus rite manufactures trakmasters for both the us ans the uk or just one model and its up to the owner to provide the right transformers for the component.
