How to record guitar and voice into laptop?

I am a acoustic and electric guitar player/songwriter and am trying to record guitar/vocal ideas into my laptop when I travel. I have a Pentium 4 laptop with 1 GB RAM, a minidisc player and may get a Line6 Guitar Port. Would you recommend an affordable USB preamp? I am trying to save from carrying the least equipment.
Your feedback is appreciated.

Recording guitar direct! what do you use?

I've been getting ok results recording my guitar direct to my DAW but would like to see if anyone has any suggestions or tips to give it some "air" or "room space". in other words it sounds very dry and in your face.

here is my setup.

guitar/ effects pedals(eq/distortion/chorus/delay)/ tube preamp/ ADA Microcab(cabinet simulator)/ Emu 1212m(sound card).

Acoustic Guitar(x-y and over the shoulder Micing technique)

Has anyone tried doing an X-Y configuration in front and an over the shoulder mic on acoustic guitar?

I know its common to use the X-Y and I know some people use the over the should and one mic in front but has anyone used this combination with good results? Im just curios.

I have a session thursday and I'm thinking about trying this.

Software Guitar Modelers? Suggestions?

Has anyone had any possitive experience with Guitar Modelers like: Amp Farm, Amplitube, etc?

Has anyone been able to get usable guitar tones through them? I have heard about using Amp Farm with lots of other instruments such as vocals and even drums... but havnt heard much positive feedback in regard to actual 'guitar'...

Anyone found any tricks?
