latency problem

I have a Digi 002 rack & Pro Tools 6.1.1 with bundled software, including Sample Tank SE. I have a custom built 2.6 PIV with 512 MB ram. This gear is a fairly recent acquisition, so I have a lot to learn.

I would like to minimize the monitoring latency while playing (& recording) a SampleTank instrument e.g. piano, so that it doesn't affect my performance.

Latency Problems on adjacent channels of Delta 1010LT

I switched the two XLR inputs on my 1010LT to line levels and have them connected to a sub mixer for my drum toms and overhead mikes. The snare and bass are connected to two of the regular RCA analog inputs through a separate mixer. Now when I record I'm experiencing latency between the snare & bass inputs and the sub mixer inputs.

DAW latency?

From researching the subject, mostly from information on this site, I had the notion that DAW latency was determined by the effiiency of the software drivers of the hardware. Meaning latency was due to hardware limitations, and software had little if any effect on latency.
then I read this:

Understanding Latency

So if I'm mixing in Samplitude, and I bus track 1 out of the computer and into an outboard reverb, and out of the reverb back to the track 2 in the computer, track 2 will be out of sink with the rest of the tracks?

What causes this phenomenon? A/D D/A conversion? Does latency also occur with onboard software plugins?

Thanks,
Robert

SONAR RME Audio Digi96/8 pad, reducing latency

Hi, Im not so new to the world of recording but relatively new to recording using a PC.

Im using a 2GHz Celeron with 512 MBs RAM kitted out with a RME Audio DIGI 96/8 PAD card (and a SBLive 5.1 gamer which I run all the system sound through).

Im using Sonar 2.2 XL and ASIO drivers (as SONAR has issues using WMD with the RME audio card)
