multi-channel recording
I've also posted this in Budget Gear as I need to keep the cost down at this time.
We have nearly all we need for live shows, now I would like to record the live shows and small studio sessions into a digital multi-channel recording. Currently I'm using a small 2 channel DAT, but find I want to be able to re-mix later.

Who makes this multi-channel insert/DI summing box?
I would be in seventh heaven if I could procure a rack unit which had the following specs (on each channel):
Insert input: typical unbalanced insert cable (TRS, Tip = Send, Return = Ring)
Single vs. . Multi-pattern mics
I own a Shure KSM32 which I'm quite happy with. I am considering getting a second one. However, I'm wondering what recording situations I'm going to short change myself on by not moving up to the KSM44 which has more available patterns.

Multi-Pair Cable?
I am getting really tired of having 50 million cables running all over my studio...
But since this is a home project studio, I do not have any permanently installed cabling, although I am considering it as an option.

Multi-functional soundcards
Out of all of what's on the market (native audio), I personally think that the MOTU products are very close in spec's to that of Avid's Digidesign Pro-tools hardware. I wish their products did'nt cost so much, but then again, you get what you pay for. So in essence, we're paying for the converters and everthing else is just thrown in. The others on the market are for us budget minded folk.

Bar Scene Multi-Tracking
Okay I figured I would toss this out there and see if I can't get some wisdom from the local gurus. I have been asked to multi-track a few bands playing at a local bar. They are wanting it for demo CDs. I know this is not as ideal as taking them into a studio but what suggestion might some of you have. I have a few choices of equipment.

I need pro thoughts on multi-effects processors
It seems like every manufacturer has jumped onto the bandwagon with these. I've tried a few, but can't reach a conclusion on which to buy for fear that it will kill my recordings. I might play out with it once in a blue moon, too. I just want to be sure it's as clean and quiet as possible.
Multi-Band Compression
This is a topic of intense debate, since it is very much like EQ'ing...there are guidelines, but to do this well, you need to use your ears and a bit of experience.
