panning,eq, ratio ?

i started out with music few months ago, boy i never read so many books tutorials and in forums in my life anywayz,i learned loads in this time.but i do struggle with few things like panning right why, how.i've seen that many use ratio's like 1:4 or 1:8 what is that supposed to mean, please be kind to me, i'm just an upcoming producer who loves to spread love and good music!bless

Panning Pop and RnB Background Vocals

I've been studying several RnB and Pop mixes. I've noticed the separation that they get with the mixes among the backgrounds, leads and the instruments. It seems that the backgrounds are often being panned hard left and right with the leads, kick, bass and snare center. The instruments such as keys and guitars seem to be at 3,4,8 and 9 o'clock.

Panning...

Ok so I have another issue I've been wrestling with...standard panning procedures.

I guess I view a song as a tapestry, where all the nuances should have a chance to be heard.

In my last prog rock band I had a difficult time mixing so that everything had its right place in the mix.

Panning and Psychoacoustics

I was thinking today about stereo--- and a paper that i wrote a while back.

If i was listning to a single point source, and i moved to the left or right of it, not only would there be an amplitude difference, but there would be a time difference as well. So if a source was to the right of me, my left ear would recieve the information slightly later then the right ear.

drum overhead panning

i was wondering how you guys pan the drum overheads. i had always done a hard left/right pan with the overheads until i read an article recently that suggested a tighter spacing made for a more realistic soundstage (something like 10 and 2 o'clock).

what does everyone else do? do you pan differently based on how you mic'ed the kit (xy vs spaced pair)?
