Compression settings

Hello i am new to this site and to enginering and have had a search and can't seem to find any compression setting examples for drum kits, guitars bass electric acoustic, vocals, synth, piano etc it would be great if someone knows of any good links etc outlining ratios and thresholds release attack settings for me to explore as i keep on making a right mess of my tracks.

Anyways...

I have an HP laptop (DV4000) with a Soundmax sound card. I'm using Adobe Audition 1.5, and a small Yamaha mixer, with the "Rec Out" of the board plugged into the mic input on the laptop. I know, not the greatest, but I use it to record basic tracks when they pop into my head so I won't forget 'em.

settings for 4 track ?

I'm useing a boss br532 4 track mixer and i got a mxl condencer mic with phantom power hooked up to the 4 track and putting the mic in front of my acoustic in the right places like the 12th fret and been recording it but when i record it it sounds ok but i want a better sound a more clear sound it seems all the highs mids and lows are not right and there are all kinds of setings that you can us

i'm using a Yamaha EMX66M 600 watt powered mixer w/12 in Peaveys...4pc live (i'm not recording) rock band w/vocals only going through the mixer/pa. any rule of thumb as to eq settings on the graphic equalizer? (i.e. add some freq "X"/or cut on freq "y"). and what are the sweet frequencies to boost for fullness and the "in frontness" that vocals need?
