who wants to explain signal to noise...
can one of you experts explain signal-to-noise ratios, like why exaclty peak levels are at -db, what about spl? I have a pretty good concept of them all, but no idea how they interconnect, or why they are really important. thanks!

Warming up the signal with a tube?
Some guy over at Tech Talk wants to build a "tube warmer" to warm up his digital recordings. Anybody here ever use a single stage unity gain tube stage to do this?
Thanks!

simple signal path question
typically, on a mixer, do tracks need to be assigned in order for signal to output from a tracks direct out? meaning, do they need to be assigned L-R, 1-2, 3-4, for signal to be output? or are they always being output regaurdless of assigning? i am referring to the Allen & Heath MixWizard 1442 if that means anything. thanx.

No Optical Signal to ADAT XT from NUENDO 96/52
Hi,
I have an optical connection from my PCI card (Nuendo 96/52) to my ADAT XT. I'm trying to send 8 channels of digitial audio to the ADAT.
I have two questions.
Cable length and signal degradation?
I'm using Pro Co Excalibur cables currently, which are 20'. I'm wanting to cut down on excessive cable length to ensure the highest quality recordings as possible on my home studio budget.
1) Including the patch cable, and entire routing, what total cable length should I be shooting for, with an unbalanced cable?

Pristine Signal Path
I have a G5 running Logic, Neumann u87, BLUE and RODE mics. Does anybody have any suggestions on what I should put between the mics and the computer? I'm starting to do some voice over work, + duo and trios, so I figure I'll need at least one really nice channel, maybe two.

signal to noise with direct guitar
I was recording a dry guitar thru an Avalon 737 last night. The dry sound on tape is real clean. I then went out an aux, balenced, thru a radial JDI, out of the JDI, unbalenced, into a pod. When the pod comes back into the mixer it has more hiss and less balls then plugging straight into the pod.

better signal to noise with dry guitar
I am recording some dry guitar tracks tonight and am getting more hiss than I want when going back through the pod. I have a les paul going straight into an Avalon 737 then into the mixer. I am coming out of an aux, balenced, into a radial JDI then unbalenced into the pod. The pod then back into the mixer. I am just getting too much hiss on the pod sound. Am I doing something wrong?

Split ADAT Optical Signal?
Jzk8qwHi,
I'm trying to find a device that would split an 8 channel lightpipe signal into 2. I have an 8-channel preamp with 24-bit/44.1khz ADAT Lightpipe output.
I need to send a signal to my computer for recording and also to my digital mixer for monitoring. I just need a simple 2-way splitter, but it needs to not affect the signal in any way.
