Hey everyone,
I have a home studio that is mainly used for voice-over work...ie commercials, imaging for radio stations, etc.
Currently I am using a Neumann TLM49 paired with a dbx 286A mic preamp.
I am looking to improve my sound through a different mic processor. I feel I have a damn good mic, just not enough behind it to make it shine like I want...But still no complaints. Just wanting to purchase the best bang for my buck!
Some considerations on my budget:

spgiebler, while you already have a wonderful microphone that DBX 286A vocal processor, from what I remember, doesn't deliver a true 48 volt phantom power supply? Which would mean that poor microphone of yours isn't getting the proper polarization voltage on the capsule. And so you're probably not getting the sound I think you should be getting even from that device? I've installed that same vocal processor for the John McLaughlin series of programs at his office and it sounds great. However, I used a Beta 87 electret condenser microphone which didn't require a full 48 volt supply.
So before I would invest in another preamp which doesn't have all of the features of that vocal processor, I would definitely check to see if it is delivering a full 48 volts of phantom?

Remy's right as usual. In any case, for that mic, you deserve a

In any case, for that mic, you deserve a better pre than any you mentioned.
TVPS likes the True as do a lot of others. You might also want to consider a Grace 101, Sytek, DAV BG1 or other high-headroom, transparent pre.
Personally, for VO work, I REALLY dig Langevin pres (the new ones, owned by Manley). Very open, clean and full - perfect for VOs.

Sadly I had to sell mine to fund the True P8 !!!!
Another train of thought would be a transformer based pre, my backup, a Presonus MP20 with Jensen trannies, and upgraded (Linear Technologies)
op-amps sounds really nice with the "TLM" (transformer-less) line of
Neumanns.
Just a thought.
