KEL Audio HM-1 for OH and maybe a shure beta 52 for kick

Consider a Beyer M88 if you want a good kick drum mic you can also use for bass, guitar, brass, vocals, etc. You may be able to pick one up second hand. For overheads perhaps the SE Electronics SE1? They're very cheap.. never tried one but they get good reviews and my Z5600A valve LDC sounds great!

My favorite kick mic is the AKG D112. It also works great on bass amps and low toms.

There are a lot more overhead options, how much do you want to spend?

My votes - D112 is a decent, cheap kick mic, Electrovoice RE-20 costs a bit more but is better value for money (sounds better, more versatile).

Rode make good, reasonably inexpensive condensers for OH's. But then how cheap is "inexpensive"?

i would check budget before making recomendations.

for kick it's usually not a budget thing as a taste thing.

i like atm25 & d112 on kicks.

oh's are tricky cause everyone has a million opinions on it.

for tight budget check out the octava mc012 matched pairs available from the sound room, or rode nt5s, etc.

i use a pair of studio projects c3's sometimes, also used the groove tubes gt55s and whatever else i can get my hands on. i just did a session with a pair of AT4050's and they were great.

I prefer an SM7 on kicks, but have used with tremendous success an EV 767 or 454B stage mic...their natural proximitiy effects can really help with the low end whomp factor...

OHs, I grab for either a set of Josephson C42s, AT4041 pair, or (if using the Glyn Johns approach) a set of ADK A51 ser III....

I've heard some great recordings that used SM57s as overheads...so it really depends on the driummer, the drums, the room, the pres, etc....

In the FWIW department...get the best sound you can with the absolute minimum number of mics - makes mixing pretty simple, and reduces/eliminates phase issues....

If your looking for something really cheap to get the job done MXL makes a variety of large diaphram condensors and overhead condensors that sound great as overheads. I'm really impressed with that brand over-all. for a little more you could always invest in a set of Rode NT 1As I used a set just the other week as overheads on one of my friends kit's and am very happy w/ the result. If you do decide to shell out some real $$$ eventually though AKG C-414 all the way.

As for bass cabs and kicks I like the beta 52 or the EV-RE20 personally. If you wanted to go really cheap on that the Sure PG 52 is ok just dont expect stellar results.
