I want to step up to a mic for about $1000-$2000. No more entry level large condenser mics. I want a keeper. I dont need all the patterns in my project studio, just for vocals. First thoughts are a Neumann TLM 193 or equivalent. I keep getting told just to buy a U87, but I cant seem to justify the expense if I dont have a use all of the mics patterns. Led Zeppelin/Zebra style vocals.

Extended range on a mic doesnt mean brittle.Especially when were talking about the differences between a mid to lower priced mic compared with higher end stuff. There is no 'brittle' in ANY Soundelux mic. The TLM193 is a good choice,but probably something you'll want to try out before deciding...IMHO as far as a U87 goes, as used, you're not really paying any more for the patterns than the badge.It ,again, will be a subjective choice as this is also a slightly hyped mic in those frequencies you seem to have a fear of......As for the patterns, there's a lot a person can do with a patterned mic in a really good room on vocals as well as other instruments.
At this price point and with the idea of buying once and buying a 'keeper', you're going to want to spend some quality time with several different mics before deciding.Its the only way you'll ever know.
BTW...what signal chain are we talking about here? Could be your 'brittle' is coming from there rather than the mic.The reason I ask is your reference to the SM7 sounding much like an SM57 and being harsh.This has not been my experience with this particular mic and points me to suspect something else in the chain is creating this anomally.

I would say its the pre you're hearing.The Focusrite you have is known for having a bit of a harsh/edgy sound.Perhaps you should look there first.....though having a 'keeper' mic can never be a bad decision.I'm just not sure that you'll be getting your monys worth through that particular pre no matter what mic you choose.

I also like that Neumann U87 and Soundelux U99 becuse enhance the middle freq nicely.
