Hi all,

I compared DP 3.11 to DP 2.72 and heard some suprising differences in warmth and detail. 2.72 was better. 3.11 was brighter, dryer, and lacked low-level detail.

I really want to demo another application to further my research. I have ther 2408MKII, so I suppose the application would need to be compatible with that as well as OS9.

Any suggestions?

Dean

Hi Xavier,

What OS are you running with DP 4.12? How is the processor efficiency? I'm running a lowly Powermac G4 Dual 450 with 1.3G RAM. I get my ass handed to me pretty early on in the mix as it is with DP 3.11 and OS9.

Can you attempt to elaborate on the improvement in audio quality comparing DP 3.11 to DP 4.12?

Do you think the direct digital interfaces, such as the lightpipe you mentioned, on the 2408MKII are legit and worthy of transferring data from a pricey converter, or should I send it down the river entirely? Doesen't DP 4.12 require the newer PCI 424 card, or is that related to the choice between OS9 and OSX?

Thanks,

Dean

I'm on a G4/400, the DP4.12 update greatly improved DP's performance on OSX.

DP now has a "Freeze" function that allows you to reduce CPU load, and instrument tracks have been added to handle virtual instruments.

As for sound the DAW comparison CD, at Pro-rec showed that most DAWs can pretty much capture audio equally. Sound coloration happens when you apply eq and effects, otherwise it's mostly perception. It's virtually impossible to tell DAWs appart in side by side tests.

Hi maintiger, good to see you here.........where's FM?

I'm still using OS 9 on my Ti powerbook for mobile recording with DP 3.11. Still have DP3.11 on the Quicksilver dual 800 as well and considering moving up to DP 4.12 because when I transferred the files to the Quicksilver to mix and add Waves plugins I'm running into trouble with CPU problems running a total of 17 plugins on a 14 track mix. Verbs are the CPU hog on the vocals and drums.

I see gdoubleyou makes the point about the Freeze function, maybe that's the solution! I have never had a problem before but this mix seems to be pushing the limits of the Quicksilver.

maintiger, I am also considering an Apogee 8 channel converter.................you seem perfectly happy with yours. I'm considering a firewire version because I am using the Motu 896HD with the Ti Powerbook for the live gigs but it has to stay in OS 9 for the moment because of all the reported problems from our friend Meltdown.

I'll be back

forsooth :D
