Well this might be a stupid question...but I really don't know much about this. I have been messing around with recording myself and my band for about 3 years now. I have decided that I want to put out a CD of my own songs. mainly for my friends and family (and who ever else wants it) I will be doing all of the recording/mixing/mastering/artwork/packaging blah blah blah myself!

I have also been approached by another band that wants to put out a CD (also for friends and family) and would like me to record them.

Do I need a record label or would this be considered independent? Should I start my own record label?

Thanks

If you're just producing the band, and letting them find a distributor, then you aren't running a label.

I guess I didn't word my question right. Or maybe I am making this more complicated than it really is. I will be making the cd's for friends and family, and possibly sell some off of my website. I will not be using a distributor..............I will be the distributor.

I realize that I am not running a label......
I guess I just wasnt clear as to what the record label's role was in this process. If it is nothing more than what you say then I guess I don't need to worry about it.

thanks

What you are doing is considered an independent label. A self published CD of your own bad would make you an independent label

If you will be doing it for another band, then you should make up a name for your "Label" and release their CD with your logo. Help them promote and take a %, and you are a Label.

no -- you don't need a label. if its just a local release that needs no promo, touring support, distribution (national/regional) etc, then you're best without one.

well, in fact, a label wouldn't even take you on for a project that size (please, thats not an insult, just reality) .... anyways, good luck with the records and may they be enjoyed.
