Who (you guys) owns what by Earthworks? I am looking at getting the omni drum kit system.
I really like what I've heard about them (talk wise and sound wise)
They sound jaw dropping to me.
They are appox $1680, but I want them real bad :!:
So I was hoping that if I spend that kind of dough on drum mic's that I wouldn't need much else more in the way of drum mic's.

I've used the QTC-1's as room mics for various projects, mostly in school. I loved them, would love to have a pair. I was looking at that drum kit too, but I fear it may be very very room dependent. I mostly do rock, so the 'mic and gate' method works well for me since I don't have access to a great sounding room. Let me know how it works out for you though.

yo man, chekc ou the Avenson STO-2's. 500 for a matched pair. I haven't heard them yet but have heard/read great things. Supposed to be Earthworks killers....etc etc. I've been trying a more simplistic approach here lately using 2 omni LD condensors about 10 feet back, very wide and an omni LD (AT 4050) on a solid kick head about 1 foot back. Sounds very cool/roomy BUT I have a nice sounding drum room too. If you don't have a killer room i'm not shrue how any omni's would work for ya. I'm in Austin where the Avensons are made and the guy is going to bring some by to check out. I"ll post more, but it'll be a few weeks. Mercenary and Atlas pro audio sell them I think. btw I'm not affiliated in any way with Avenson..... Good luck

I read some stuff about these and ordered the demo disc and am excited to hear what these mics can do. Like McCheese, I do mostly rock (metal often times) so I'm wondering if these would even be appropriate for that style. But if it would work, I have a feeling it might give a unique sound compared to the close-mic'd-and-compressed-to-hell drum sound that's so common.

Yo....here's my 2 cents on the DrumKit CD if anyones interested. Just got the disk and listened to it on my home stereo, not my my HR 824's (which I'll do later). The DrumKit system does sound good with the omni's sounding significantly better than the cards TO MY EARS. Bigger, more open, sweeter somehow.....but I wonder if most people will get the same results due to the difference in rooms etc. I don't like the toms and kick sounds thru the Earthworks mics only. I'd still want to use a D112/ATM 25/AT 4050 etc on kick. I'd still want to close mic the toms as well, to me they needed a little more "heft" and stereo seperation. The snare (on the omni version) sounded great! Needs nothing else imo. I'd really love to check out the Earthworks omnis compared to the Avenson Audio STO-2's (stapes mics). I'll try to swing this somehow and report back. Right now I'm thinking I'm gonna replace my MK012's with the STO-2's and see how that goes. I'm thinking moving to omni's for overheads will be sweet. (I'm discovering the benefits of using omni's for LOT's of things lately) Does anyone have experiance with the STO-2's VRS the Earthworks? Anyone know what the STOs rise time is compared to the ultra quick Earthworks? I'll contackt Avenson and see...........

I don't have the kit, but I do have a pair of the TC20's which are very similar to the TC25's in the kit that I've used as overheads for years and they're great. The imaging is phenomenal and the sound is as good as the source. I haven't found the fact that they're omnidirectional to be a problem in my basement, which is certainly a less-than-ideal acoustic environment. Since there's no bass rolloff with distance the low end is huge. I do still keep close microphones on the toms but don't wind up using them nearly as much as I do when I use cardioids overhead.
