I'm running Pro Tools LE into a Mac G5. I use an ISA 428 and a vmp 4000e as preamps. The mics are C 414s and MD 421s. The cables are Mogami. The preferred cola is Dr. Pibb.
...and on occasion when I've double mic-ed something, when I listen on playback, it distorts in places. This has happened with horns and with guitars, as far as I can tell. A crackling distortion. In long, sustained notes. Very annoying.
Yet, when I just listen to ONE of the mics, everything's fine. When I pan the two mics, everything's fine. But when they meet up in the middle, there's some minor distortion.
The DigiDesign guy (after a 30 minute wait) told me he never heard of this before, and that maybe I was peaking the faders in the "mixer" (which is in the computer) and that I needed to experiment with using a Master Fader any time I play back.
What do ya'll suggest? Do you agree? Is it a Master Fader thing and I'm just pushing the faders too hard? Am I peaking the mixer? Do you have any similar experiences?
I'm not peaking the preamps, and when I'm recording, my levels onscreen stay in the green.

have you tried just turning down the track faders...i hardly ever turn down my master fader.
also, do you have any plugins in the tracks? i have clipped the tracks with plugins when i didn't realize it cause i was using a compressor after the plugin that was clipping. (usually eq before compressor)
just watch the levels at EACH stage of preamp, plugin, fader, etc.
start at the fader and work backwards until you find what is causing it.
