hi,
I'm looking at upgrading my ART tube preamp systym to a more high quality pre(1 or 2 channels). I'm looking at something like an Avalon but want to be more educated of other choices that may be out there. i have a Neumann TLM 103 and will have an AKGc451. i want a preamp that will sound great with whatever mic i upgrade to in the future as well. the kind of tone that i want is something that isn't colored too much. i want a very "open/vintage/natural" tube sound. is there anythying out there that is in the price range of about 1,300-1,500$(used). please help and thatnks a bunch!

Why tube? You can get some great vintage, warm, beautiful sounds from hi end non tube units. Neve, API, Trident etc.

On the tube front the UA 610 is easily in your price range, it's supposed to be a recreation of what the first Van Halen, Sinatra, Pet Sounds etc was recorded with.

You might could save a bit more and get a GT ViPre. I saw GC has em new for about $2200. They're coming down in price. Take your cash and finance the rest at GC. It'll be one kick ass tube pre!!
