Okay -
So I'm pretty darned acquainted with good ole fashioned mixing consoles and outboard gear. I even know my way around a good DAW. But one thing I'm absolutely stupid about is MIDI. I used it back in the day when I was in college to write stuff into Finale, but that's about it.
Well, now I'm segueing into more rock, alternative and pop styles of music and it's becoming VERY apparent that I need to know the ins and outs of midi.
So, here's what I've tried. I have a POS midi keyboard which I've been using to send midi notes to Sequoia. I can record the notes with no problem. However, maybe it's my stupidity, but I was under the impression that, I could record the midi notes and then assign any instrument to it that I wanted. Then I could use it in the mixdown - in other words, bounce down the tracks with the digital audio and the MIDI together. Well, I can't seem to do any of that.
I can -
record the notes
hear the notes played back to me, but only through my POS keyboard - I've selected the AES 16 "virtual midi" from my outputs, but then I hear nothing.
I can't -
get it to do a damn thing with my VSTi
Bounce down in any mix
The VSTi that comes with Sequoia is a device called Robota. It has some pretty cool stuff built in, but even the stuff where it plays some of its own licks, I can't record, sample or loop it.
Is it possible to help me or am I too far gone?

It will play all sorts of techno beats, but nothing like what I actually put into the midi inputs.
Also, when I bounce the multi-track project down, only the WAV info bounces, none of the midi stuff does. Am I doing something wrong here?
BTW, is there a source for free VSTi's so I can try this out without having to drop an arm and a leg?

I believe you will have to record the output of the VST to an audio track to get it to be present in your mixdown. It's been a while since I used Samplitude, and I don't have that much experience with it in the first place.
What kind of sound are you looking for? I do a lot of MIDI based music production and have a large collection of sample libraries and instruments. I might be able to help you out.

I'm not sure what sounds I'm after at this point. I'm still trying to figure it out. I figure, once I've started to learn how to do it, I can probably start to make informed decisions about what sounds or equipment I want. Let me see if this sounds right - I just got this information from a colleague in the area and I wanna make sure I understood him correctly.
To record midi is rather simple - hook it to the PC, tell the PC what device and hit record. (This I've done so far, so I'm confident about that part).
Second, I need to assign the output of the midi to either a midi output (going to a sequencer, keyboard, etc.) or to a VSTi.
If I go to the sequencer, I would take an analog or digital feed back out from the sequencer with the sounds that I've used and feed it back into the DAW.
If I go VSTi, then I need to do the same just identify the VSTi as the host for the sounds.
Then, I essentially need to hit play and record on the DAW to play back the midi file, send it to the instrument and return it to the DAW.
Does this sound like I'm actually understanding it?

Since you are newish to midi..a minor correction:
You wouldn't send the midi notes back to a "sequencer". A sequencer is essentially a midi recording device. You've already recorded the midi notes, in essence, using Sequoia as your sequencer.
From there you just send it out to a synth or to a VSTi like you said.

Pull up your track info. Set the record option to 'MIDI'. In the MIDI section, set your record device to whatever your MIDI interface is and the playback device to the VSTi of your choice.
This oughtta do it.
