I am trying to start my own home studio so that i can record all the songs that i write. This is the stetup i have. 1 samson condenser mic. Behringer8 slot mixer that i connect to my sound card on the back of my computer. I am using cool edit for recording.
Is this a crapy way of doing things. and also what is a decent sound card to buy. i am just using the one that came with my computer and so far all of my recordings have sounded like crap. I have just started trying this so if any one out there has some pointer for me that would be great

As far as "is this a crappy way of doing things?", depends what you're looking to use your recordings for and also alot depends on how well you can use your gear. I'm amazed at how much better my recordings are getting, not because my gear is changing but because I'm getting better at using the gear that I've got.
If you don't already, I'd recommend getting a decent pair of monitors and/or good headphones. Its amazing the sounds that can exist in a mix that normal speakers just wont show. If you are on a tight budget you could probally get more bang for your buck with some good headphones that will work great for recording, and mixing. I've got several pairs of Sennheiser 280's and I'm addicted to them. At $99 a pair these headphones have got to be the best listening experience in that price by far, and they have great isolation for recording as well.

Sure if you want to go deaf. PA monitors are not good for much else other than what they were intended.
If you can't afford much work with what you have or get a decent set of el cheapo monitors. Use them and learn to work with their inadequacies. Take your mixes to different systems so you can hear where your setup is lacking. That's something you'll have to do no matter how nice your monitors are.
In regards to the 2496: it's perfect for someone who is just learning and better than what many hobbyists are willing to settle with. go to an one of the "music"(soundclick et al.) sites and listen to the kwality of some of those recordings. CRAP! But, that's about what you can achieve with a "high end" soundblaster card and a cracked version of *insert DAW software here*.
In the end your best tools will be your ears, persistance, humble attitude(you may get trashed for your first few attempts), and a willingness to learn from people with more experience.
