Hey I got the info in the mail and the new 32 is looking really sweet. I don't suppose the d8b could serve as a controller for ss32 as well?

Also, forgive my ignorance but when you use a digital console to receive your original signal and then go out of it and into the 896, haven't you already used the converters in the console, thus missing out on the quality of the 896 converters?

A digital mixing board like the D8B can also be used as a control surface, so the audio wouldn't necessarily have to go through it.

For all intents and purposes they're similiar--price is slightly higher ($6500. US list) but has some of the options included (see the preliminary brouchure at soundscape-digital.com) They plan to use a different, faster processor (since the one R.Ed uses is becoming hard for manufacturers to get.)
If there are any US SSHDR or Paris users out there that want to participate in the upgrade program, please feel free to contact me--based on the interest level, I expect demand to be very heavy!

the latest news in the Netherlands here is that a sshdr1+ unit can be traded in for about 2000 euro when you buy a soundscape32 (extra price remaining 4800 euro). Since the software is the same, and a 24/24 system is fine for me, I consider to get myself three extra sshdr+ units (each 6 tracks 24 bit), which you can now get for less than 900 euro a piece. Total extra costs: 2800 euro.

However, is it true, then, that you can run 4 sshdr+ units together with only one ISA card? Anybody out there having experience with that setup? And what about the plugins, if there is a plugin on unit1, I guess it can it be used on the others. Or do I need to buy, say, Timeworks 4 times? (that would be rediculous and driving me into bankruptcy)

While buying multiple units may have been a good way to go in the past, we're beginning to see what lies ahead for the older product. For example, while SSHDR's are able to run the current software, they are unable to use the new crossfade feature--their hardware simply won't support it. Certainly in the near future software updates for the older product could cease altogether.
The upgrade program is a GREAT way to move from hardware that is up to nine years old (or in the case of EMUENSONIQ Paris owners, completely orphaned...) into a top of the line system with a real future--(there's amazing stuff coming!)

That having been said, according to the manual "up to four Soundscape R.Ed or SSHDR-1 plus Rack units can be installed on one PC if two expansion slots are available to r the Host Interface cards" (meaning "ISA" cards, or the parallel cable--if you're using the new PCI card interfaces, reports are that you would need one per unit.)
Plug-ins can be shared between units using current software.

Actually, I just have a few questions...
I assume that the R.Ed 32 is still selling, and that the Soundscape 32 is not released yet (?). Do you have a projected date of release?
Do you have any special discounts on complete systems for RO moderators who don't work for Soundscape/Mackie, but "plug" Soundscape every time they see someone on RO looking for a new DAW? :D
You mentioned in your previous post that there are a lot of other great things in the near future coming from Soundscape. Could you please "leak" a little info to us?
I was a little surprised to read that further updates on the SSHDR may be discontinued. Actually, it's amazing how SS has kept-up with it this far. Nine years of producing a DAW and still offering heavy-duty support is unheard-of in this industry, and SS is definately to be commended for it. A company's track record is a major consideration when choosing a DAW, in my opinion. There are some DAW manufacturers that drop you like a hot potato once you fork over your cash (not to mention any names). It's great to know that if you buy a SS product that you'll get top-notch support til it's far-past obsolete, and then some.

Since I last posted here, I gave what I said a little thought ... a SS upgrade from ProTools. It was only a joke, obviously, but you know, it REALLY would make sense!
Think about it ... you are offering a substantial amount of cash off of the purchase of a new SS product to people who are already convinced about SS.
Soundscape's direct competitor is Digidesign, and they have left SO many of their customers high and dry. If a company with the customer support history of Soundscape's came along and rescued them, you'd have a HELL of a lot of new customers! I still peek-in on the SS forums from time to time, and nothing has really changed in terms of customer satisfaction since "the takeover" ... still a big buncha happy campers. I NEVER see people in there bitching about SS, neither about the products nor the service. Have you been on "The Duc" lately? Still the same old Duc ... know what I mean?

Hmmm...Ang chiming-in on the SS post...very interesting! It's been a very long time since Ang and I chatted (way too long IMHO), but at that point he was considering getting a SS demonstration to run it thru the paces. I remember laughing my ass off when he was saying how badly he wanted to crash it! I wish we still had our chat on RO (hint to Chris).
Ang ... did you ever get your hands on the SS system? If so, I'm very curious about your personal findings and opinion.
If you recall, you gave me a lot of your time to explain a lot of things about "why host-based systems can't compete until computing-in-general reaches a certain level". The information and advice that you gave me was very helpful and clear, and I REALLY appreciate it! Since I'll never, EVER buy another digi product, I'm saving my hard-earned pennies to fork-over to SS. Can your "Here-here" be construed to mean that you may also be "escaping from the dark (digi) side"?

Ohhh...and Bert...who do we talk to about implementing the new digi-upgrade program? Chris Wright? Hehehe...
As part of that program, you guys could give some of us digi-repressed RO moderators a FREE upgrade to SS32, just cuz you like us ... :D
