This is going to sound like a complete joke to most of the people on the forum but I would like some advice before a purchase a new mic.

Friends and I have recently been working on some hip hop music and are know starting to try to get a good setup going on for recording. Not knowing anything before I started to read on this forum I purchaed a few things that I thought would increase the quality of our recordings. (pc based)

I bought a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS Soundcard that has 24bit audio and a Souny dynamic microphone (just a regular stage mic). Although this was an improvement from what I had before. It's still not living up to what I was hoping for. (clear and crisp vocals)

Could someone please recomed a better mic for me, my best deal for under $200? New or used, I can either order online or check out local music shops around my county.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Mike Breault

Your problem can also be in the fact that are not running it through a mic preamp. You will never get the full range, volume and dynamics from any mic - whether it is a 80.00 mic or 4000.00 mic without a mic preamp ..

Something you defintily need to consider if you want your vox sound to approach anything close to "(clear and crisp vox)"

For vocals ussually large diaphragm is the way to go. These will need phantom power to work and so you also have to have something to power up the mic (most external preamps have this). I use an AKG 414 uls for vocals. They discontinued the model I have but I think the new 414's are available for around $700-800. Anyways, I think any LD microphone will offer you a noticeable difference.

1) high quality mic pre amp
2) any mic (hint--go demo mic's at a local music store & see what you think)
3) use mogami cable (dont use cheap ass cables) they will fuck up the signal.
Here are the main reasons to stay away from cheap ass cables...
a) eddie currents
b) copper that has not had the oxygen removed
c) signal degeneration
d) lower dynamics
e) and more noise due to various imperfections
hope this helps!
