Hello all, I am not very experienced with all this stuff, But am strugling with room modes (i think) Basicley i am a hifi listener not a recording person. But in my listening room when i play music all vocals and most center stage sounds, appear to come slightly to the right hand side? I have tried the usual swopping of kit from left to right etc but to no avail. Only when i change the ballance controll on my amp does it centralise. But then obviously sound stage is impared on the right. Is thair a general rool like extra absOrban t / reflective treatment to one side of the room etc th bring centralisation back. Craig: This may seem like a lot of trouble, but I think it's the first step in determining if your prob is the room or not. It sounds like you may have an issue with the signal chain in your stereo. Check that all your cables are the same guage and length on the left and right sides. this includes speaker cables.
If your problem persists, get a hold of a voltmeter. Connect the negative and positive wires up to the appropriate speaker wires.
What you need to do now is measure the voltage on the left and right sides of the stereo, in order to make sure the stereo balance is truly even.
In order to do this accurately you will need to put a test tone through the system. Ask someone who will know, or go to an electronics store, get a device like an oscillator or an audio cd with a 1000hz test tone.(1khz)
Simply put the test tone through the amp and use the meter as a guide to adjust the balance perfectly. If there is any difference in voltage from one side to the other, check your cables first before you make adjustments to the balance. Measure left then right then repeat, keep going until you have exact voltage on each side within one tenth of a volt.
If you do things this way and still find the sound coming out off balance, then you can look at the acoustics.
Even if the problem is the stereo you should still look at acoustic treatment for the room. But first you should eliminate the easy fix!
