What's that on the wall at Abbey Road?

For reference:
Abbey Road - Studio - Studio Two

I see sheets or curtains hanging, and I see monster gobos. In the other Abbey Road studios, I see the strange panels on the wall that bulge out like pyramids or something. What are these things and what do they do? How do they work? Forgive me if I'm just not seeing the obvious.

basic recording equipment

I'm working on my home studio right now, and I was hoping to get some input on what the "Must Have" items are in your opinions. I have a Tascam Us-1800 (16 by 4) interface for A to D, Pro Tools 10, various Mics ( one large diaphragm dynamics, several small diaphragm dynamic, and a small diaphragm condenser) mic stands, cables, amps, guitars,a PA, a drum kit, stuff like that.

Mackie monitors or Sennheiser headphones?

I'm trying to do the best I can to monitor and mix my own stuff with a really low budget. I can't afford more than $200 right now, and I'm working in an untreated room. Through craigslist, I have the choice of a pair of Mackie MR5s or a pair of Sennheiser 598 headphones. They're the same price. Any recommendations?

Which one?

I'm looking at two different Mac Pros on craigslist. Right now I'm running a 2.3Ghz Dual Core G5 with 6GB RAM.
I know you can buy the quad core and then always upgrade the ram later, but i'm wondering which one is going to better as it is right now. I use a lot of plugins, and as many as 30-50 tracks in some songs.

Here are the specs of each:

64 vs. 32 bit computer system for DAW?

Hi All,

Just a quick question (I hope ): For a DAW is it then preferred to use a 32 or a 64 bit system? I'm considering Samplitude as a recording software (but not only this software), will use win7, and need a quite fast machine that is also future proof (to the extent possible) ...

Thanks for any insights you may have

Jesper
