How to get smokin' bass tone, DI, POD, Mic?

Hey guys, have a big session coming up and was wondering if any of you guys have any ideas on how I can get a killer bass tone. (Rock/Country) I ususally go thru a Meek VC3Q which I like and use a LA 2A (uad card) for comp. Sometimes just into my A%H board then Nuendo with the magneto plugin on it. Rarely do I use a mic sound.

Inexpensive LD condensers as tom mics...

I have a project coming up where we've decided we're going to focus getting more of a 70's drum sound - direct micing, very little room sound. The tom mics I currently have don't really fit the bill, so I'm wondering if I should invest in some of the cheaper LD condensers - Marshall/MXL, perhaps. I've heard of some people doing this, but I'm not really sure which models.

Whats the next step? Pre-amp? Mic?

Hey guys, got my semi pro studio up and going and doing pretty well. Was wondering what you guys would suggest for a next upgrade. Thinking I should get a nice Pre for all around. Then more specialized pre's as I go. How does this sound? Looking at spending $1500 or less on a new or used Pre. Avalon, Manley, RNP, Focusrite, AMEK , Whats should I do.

Oktava MK-319 and similar sounding mics

The singer I'm currently works with sounds awsome on this mic. But I'm not happy with the overall quality of the signal. I may perhaps just have a "bad" one, as my friend did buy it from guitar center 5 years ago, but I've always hear people saying the tone of the mic will be horrible if you happen to get a bad one, not the noise level or sensitivity.

Anyway...
