Looking for an all purpose large-diaphragm condensor mic
I've been looking for a good all-purpose large-diaphragm condensor and I just found a good deal on a used U87Ai locally. It was purchased new and never used, so it's pretty-much brand new. I can get it for $1,450, which seems like a pretty good deal. But then I think to myself that I could get a Shure KSM44 for less than half that price or an AT4050 for less than a third of that price.
Recording acoustic guitar w/ Mics pointed down from ceiling
I have treated my room a la fiberglass cloud on ceiling, and left the floor live. I like a bit of liveliness since I mostly record acoustic guitar in ORTF with some omni's. I took Ethan's advice from his faq on this and decided I'd try it with the cheaper rigid fiberglass bass traps on the ceiling with coverage at about 80%.

AEA R84 Ribbon mic... anyone tried it?
I am doing spoken word and voice-overs, and my nature is to find THE best vo mic for my work. I use Shure Beta 58s and RODE NTKs, but recently saw Wes Dooley's AEA R84 Ribbon mic that looks like a vintage RCA. Anyone have experience with this mic yet? Or what preamps flatter the ribbons?
Thanks for any replies... SG

RecorderMan's NS10 microphone
Hey all...here are some pictures of my NS10 Microphone. I went to a machine shop and had them add the bar that goes from one screw-hole over the magnet to the other one. This lets me mount it on a standard mic stand. Add this as a second mic to any other mic setup @ around -10db in level (at least, sometimes less) and you'll get an amazing modern sub low end added to your kick.

Vocal mics again
I'm really having trouble deciding what to do about a vocal mic. I would really like to have a U87 but that is one heck of a lot of money to put out right now. I've heard much talk about the AT mics but I've not heard one myself. So here are a few questions.

Neumann U87Ai or U87i? That is the question
What is the difference in these two models? Which is "Better"? I've seen both for around $1500 used. These mics seem to be a standard (along with their more expensive relatives) in good studios, but are they really worth the cash, or are there less expensive mics that sound "as good" or "better" than the U87?
