Well, here it is, yet *another* "Which mic preamp should I buy?" question... :)

I'm a songwriter and musician looking to simplify my current setup--I need to make radio/demo-quality recordings: vocal, guitar certainly; but it would be nice to have the room to add more. Want it portable. Really I want the ease and simplicity of pushing the rec/play buttons on a handheld cassette recorder at my kitchen table.

Can anyone recommend a directX plugin or package that has vocal effects - such as 'robot' or 'telephone' or ? I would prefer to pay for it and have some quality than to download it for free and have it just take up room on my hard drive.

I wanted to know what were some basic tips to start mixing. Why and where by how many degrees to pan certain instruments. What EQ should do and be mainly used for and when is it really neccissary. I'm sure the best way to learn all this is experience and an internship at a professional studio wouldnt hurt, but I was hoping you guys could give me some starting points.

I`m buying a VMP4000e that`s a couple years old.
I heard it`s a little different then the new ones.
Is there an easy way to modify it into a newer one or is it fine the way it is.

Our studio has just been given it's first chance to mix a 5.1 surround for a concert DVD. We run Pro Tools. Any advise, suggestions, tips, tricks or things we should know?

I'm looking into the Apogeea/d 16 just want to know if their are any other a/d thats just as good

Not sure if this is the place, but does anyone know what the status of Trace Elliott?

I use their bass amps, and love the sound (really ^%*^#^*@^ heavy, but compact). I can't find any info on if/when they will resume manufactering.

I use Reason and just installed an update of Pro Tools. Do you find that rewiring produces a better sound? Is Pro Tools's dithering better than Reason's downsampling?
