Help! External USB recorder/sound card needed

I really hope someone can help me with this problem, I feel like I’ve made some headway but I’m still slightly clueless! Apologies if this post is a bit long.

First off my system: I have a relatively new Compaq 1.6ghz laptop, 1GB mem, win xp sp2, with a crappy internal soundcard, no slot for a new internal one.

Sychronization :(

I'm startingf an ambitious project in pro-tools with my old Boss BR-8 (Roland). Using a midi cable I am tring to slave pro-tools to the BR-8. I have had luck in getting the Br-8's transport to control the transprt in Pro-Tools. The big problem is that there is a playback speed difference with both systems. Pro-tools runs faster even though both tempos are the same.

How is this for a recording set up?

I think i have made up my mind of my next recording interface...

I am gonna go with a Pro Tools set up, starting with a brand new macbook pro, (one with 2 gigs of RAM), A DIGI003 Rack, and an external HD dedicated to recording. I am going to start with these things and eventually get more gear when I have the funds.

Mac Pro?

so after much thought, i think i finally settled on a mac pro. Just wanted to ask a few more questions. 1) how does Cubase 4 run on the mac pro? compared to g5 and a pc of the similar quality? 2) how does firepod work on mac pro (I'm planning on upgrading that eventually) 3) i also heard something about older vst plugins not working on intel macs? Thanks for all the help.

A quick way for a cappella choir recording?

I have been asked to make concert recordings af a quite good choir (a cappela, about 24 singers) where I am one of the singers myself. I have no experience in that regard but are the 'technical guy' in the choir and do also the concert light. Now I do not worry so much about the gear necessary, also because that expense will be covered by the choir anyway.
