Getting good quality guitar sound

Hello, i have been having trouble getting a good quality sound when i record an electric guitar. With distortion and without distortion the sound is muddy and muffled. I should most likely list my equipment:

Shure SM57 - for recording acoustic and amp (Behringer )
Tascam US-428 - input for mics and guitars
IBM Thinkpad t42 1.6ghz notebook - DAW running Cubase 5

Some help pricing my gear: ns10's, v8's etc.

Hello,

This is not a FOR SALE post or spam,

Just trying to figure out how my items should be priced (craigslist). I haven't been able to find much comparison on the net (or ebay).

KRK v8's series 1 mint (with boxes and original paperwork).

Yamaha NS10m mint (with extra tweeter and 2 extra woofers- dented dust covers but sonically accurate).

Do Sample Rates Make a Difference?

I know that 24 bit makes a big difference compared to 16 bit, but someone just gave me their opinion on sample rates. They said that there isn't much of a difference between 44.1 and 96, and since 96 takes up more than twice the space on my CPU that I should just record at 44.1. Also, there has been some talk about loosing quality when converting from 96 or 88.2 down to 44.1.

VSTi - Orchestra

Do any of you have experience with Garritan Personal Orchestra or MOTU Symphonic Instrument? I was just about set to go with Garritan when MOTU's product came out. MOTU's product seems to have a larger sample library, but it isn't listed under their products on the MOTU website, which makes me nervous about support (Garritan is supposed to have extraordinary support).

Any thoughts?

monitor question

I just purchased a pair of the Dynaudio nearfields, I was wondering what's the best way to match my room to these speakers. I have lots of 2" auralex pyramid foam. Ive herd of a mirror trick where you put foam on the walls according to the reflection? not quiet sure about that. My control room is pretty small (8x8), with a glass slider to my right.

DAT tape question

A friend picked up a couple of DAT tapes for me but ended up buying different tapes than I was expecting. They bought VerbatI'm "Computer Grade Data Cartridges" I'm just wondering if there is a difference between these and the TDK or Sony audio DATS that I have used before. I'd rather not unwrap and try them if they won't work.

Thanks for any advice.
