In what way does digital recording downgrade quality, and how could I test it without spending big bucks?

Does anyone have a comparison of something recorded DIGITALLY and ANALOG?

I am upgrading my Pre's from the pre's in a Mackie 1402 to a pair of GT Bricks. The next step is upgrading my M-Audio Quatro. I am leaning very heavily towards an RME HDSP 9632.

Any help on this is appreciated. I have run a digital Studio for a couple of years using only a Mackie clock card and am sold on the Apogee Big Ben as one worth the investment. I haven't upgraded much lately and am unsure about exactly how you clock gear like the Eclipse, TCFinalizer, Lexicon reverbs, etc.

Hey everybody, I was just wondering if thw MOTU2408MKIII can play back at 24bit resolution or is it locked at 16bit.

Just wanted to say that I had a chance to do VO on this combo this past week. Monitored through some well-used AKG 280's(I believe 280's? They were 600 ohm... Gotta' take my own phones - maybe a new pair of those fold-up, US made jobbers? What are they called..? Something "...ones"?).

I have recorded some vocals and I was wondering if anybody knows how to make the vocals sound like there coming out of an old transistor radio.

I have Cubase SX and Waves plugins. I'm sure this is quite simple using an EQ but I cannot seem to get the desired effect.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

I have $ 2000 dollars to invest in pluginsand it is a jungle out there. I don't know where to start.

I have a Mac G5 with OSX with Digidesign rack 002 and Pro Tools 6.7, native system

I don't have any plugins(just the ones that came with Pro Tools). I would like nice eq, comp, rev and delay and autotune.

Looking at two 24-Bit Multitrackers (for expanding my studio operation to include location recording)...the Tascam 2488 & the Korg D1600.

Of these two units, does anyone know the mfg./model# of the onboard ADC ...or, more importantly...how the conversion/recording quality compares between the two?
