Preamps with character or personality.

I've seen quite a few threads about pre's and noticed most of the fuss is over their character or sound. I assume that most good pre's have some sort of special circuitry enhanced by industry vets as their signature series. My question is, are there any other means of obtaining a sweet sound without spending $2000 or $3000 bucks on a signature series pre? And what pre's should I avoid?

The Korg Triton "Extreme" Keyboard

I know this board is fairly new so I would'nt expect too many replies on it. But I'd like to comment on their use of a 12AU7 tube as part of the audio/effects circuitry and the 120 note polyphony they've upgraded this thing to. I currently own a Triton rack so I can imagine how it may sound. Maybe the whole Triton thing has played out and this is their way of keeping a good thing going.

Tascam Firewire DAW Controllers

I just noticed that Tascam will be rolling out their new controller, ( the US2400 ) and I'd like to get a few responses from some of you who may own the FW1884 controller. I know the 1884 is a audio/midi/controller interface & the 2400 is just a controller. But as far as a controller, how well does it do with your favorate S/W? Also just how dependable is Firewire?

recording live/motown/3 track

I am curious of the typical mic setup in a 60's motown 3 or 4 track recording session, which to my knowledge were recorded live(ie the whole band played at once). I have heard that it was the bleed between mic's that helped to create the pleasest sound of these and other recordings(I have heard this applied to zep aswell).
