Best Products / Low budget - PC set up

Im on a really tight budget (250 - 500) and I've been doing a lot of research and it sounds to me like my best bet is the following three pieces of equipment:

1. multitrack Mixing software (download free)
2. PCI card (best sound per $ (vs. USB/firewire))
3. multi track connected directly into card (record 2 guitar, 1 bass, 2 vocal, drums)

Ribbon Shootout?

Well, Blue Microphones is offering a $200 rebate on their Woodpecker ribbon mic. Tom Bethel and others have given this mic good reviews. I've been thinking about getting a better ribbon lately since my Cascade Fat Head II ribbons have been doing working out surprisingly well on acoustic instruments. I'd like to see if I can get that "ribbony" smoothness in a more precise mic.

equipment help--filming live performance

hello all,
normally i comb literally every crack of a forum for the information i need, but tonight...unfortunately i have to ask without doing much of my own researching...

I'm helping out some friends film a live music performance in a venue tomorrow night--more documentary style--but tonight we just found out they want us to get as clean audio as possible.

What's the Term for Changing Basic Straight in Guitar Sound

I have Ableton's Live version 5.2.2., and what I want is to record guitar straight in then change the sound to mimic different types of amps, both clean and distorted so I can take my pick. For awhile I was under the impression that I needed virtual instruments, but now I'm thinking that that's not the proper term for what I'm trying to describe, a little help here so I know how to search?

I am new to recording and I have some questions:

I use a Powerbook G4 12 inch with OS 10.4, I'll be using Garage Band for my recording as of now.
I want to record my guitar and vocals through a better microphone than whats built in the Powerbook.
I bought a cheap microphone from Radioshack to mess around, brought it home and plugged it into the "mic in" hole on my Powerbook but could not pick up any sound to record.

recording for VoIP phone systems

I'm recording messages to be used on a VoIP system. Due to software contraints of the phone system, the finished files must conform to CCITT u-Law, 8.000 kHz, 7kb/sec. Bad for the stereo but good for a phone.

The files play back fine within the quality constraints and the voice sounds ok over a phone, but silence is not silent. It sounds like static, white noise.

recording classical guitars

hey all!

I will be recording a classical guitar trio and I need your guys' input and help. I want this to sound great for them so i'm trying to do my research now. While i was studying recording i spent most time on recording popular music rather than classical, which is why i need help. I need help in choosing Mics and placement.
