Understanding Audio Connections
Forums
When hooking up a guitar to my PreSonus unit using the obviously unbalanced cable from a guitar, the manual states that the first two channels are instrument ready. The use of a DI box then is not really necessary is it?

setup question
Forums
using bluetube pre (2 ch) into an maudio 1814 interface and also having a Mackie onyx 800r (8ch) pre running into the 1814 using ADAT/lightpipe. And having mics running through all of them at the same time (recording drums).
I'm not sure if there will be major latency issues or not.

SM57 vs Audix i5
Forums
I know most consider the 57 industry standard, and a good go-to mic, but put popularity and all that aside. I want to know what you think of each of them and more importantly WHY.
Thanks!
EDIT: industry standard and go-to mic for Micing guitar amps and snare drums. Just so I don't get flamed for making a blanket statement. :p

Monitor noise with certain DAWs
Forums
Right now I only have demo versions or the E-MU versions of DAWs since I cannot afford full versions and really enjoy using more than one.
I recently picked up an external monitor (screen) to use from my laptop to create some much needed workspace (my laptop is 14.1" :()

how do i improve voice quality during conversion
Forums
Hi All,
Im recording a self hypnosis download and got very good quality with a .wav file but it was too big (177mb) for my server. So I converted it to .mp3. But, the .mp3 file at 41000hz sounds too slow and garbled. I reconverted at 48000 and sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Seems like mp3 work at 44000 hz but that sampling rate isn't supported by mp3 format.
audio to midi
Forums
I wanted to know if there was any mac software (hopefully freeware) out there that will take a audio file (of a single drum, like a kick) and convert it to a midi hit.

Do Treble Frequencies need to reach the ear "First"
Forums
An ad for a piece of audio gear got my attention and prompted me to post here. Basically, in describing the functionality of this item, the ad describes how the product helps to "time align frequencies so that the highs reach our ears first, which provides superior spatial imaging and richer harmonic content." So here are my questions.
Details on buffer size
Forums
What's the skinny on buffer size choice. Small buffers allow for lower latency, but are there advantages to a large buffer size?
