Audio hardware for recording into laptop (Mac)?

If this has been asked before, I couldn't find it, but perhaps you could direct me to it.

Anyway,

I am trying to figure out how to can record live drums, guitar, synth (separately or together) onto my laptop directly into Ableton Live.

From brief research it seems that the best idea is a mic and an MBOX...is that correct?

Thank you for any and all help =)

2 4-track cassette recorders linked together - possible?

I want to get some recording device for my birthday, but don't want my sisters to spend too much money. I'm don't really care as long as it sounds passable for a demo.

Would there be some way for me to hook up two 4-tracks ($160) instead of one 8-track digital recorder ($260), or would you think the difference in audio quality from cassette to CD-quality not be worth it?

I Need Help With First Studio Purchases!

I am a music teacher with all sorts of aspirations for my basement! Upon perusing this website among others, I felt it was in my best interest to open my problem to the public.

I want to be able to turn this into a very basic recording studio, where we can lay some tracks just to get ideas out. It might not be in the budget, but having 8 tracks record live to track is the goal.
