Recording Guitar Straight in then Adding Amps vs. Recording Straight in With Pedal

I just got a Voice Tonelab ST pedal which produces some very impressive tones for the guitar, great amp modeling, it's even got a real tube in it to add to the sound. I'm doing some home demos and have been recording straight in, then adding amp effects using the program/VST Guitar Rig 3 from Native Instruments.

Why is my guitar sound so muddy? (clips)

I reamped somebody else's DI's today and compared them to my own playing (not reamped) and the results have me a little down. His tone had a lot more mids and definition and mine just sounded muddy. I have been thinking about this for the good majority of the evening as to what could be the cause of the mud.

Help Diagnose Mud in Guitar Tone (Metal)

Not really part of a composition, but a buddy of mine said that he thought these tracks sounded 'hollow'. I personally think they sound more along the lines of 'muddy'. I'm not sure though, let me know what you think. You will hear three sections of double tracked guitars with slightly different tones.
