Mackie Onyx 400f low levels

Ok, I just picked this guy up from L&M on the weekend and I haven't had much time to play around with it yet (2 hours) but I've noticed something that kind of bugs me. I plugged in an SM57 to record acoustic guitar with, just as a quick little test. I also plugged in a direct line from my guitars active pickup. Both lines were into pre-amp channels 1 and 2 on the 400f respectively.

Very low input volume! Bizzare, yet troublesome problem.

EDIT: Whoops! Sorry, I think I may have posted this in the wrong forum. Mods/admins, I think it should be moved to "Home, Project Studio." Thanks!

Alright. I have a huge problem. I posted this on several forums, but I just recently found recording.org. Hopefully, I can post here and get some more input on my troubles:

COMPUTER SPECS:

firepod low level

I just purchased the firepod yesterday and I'm having problems with getting any real level. I tried to record separately a vibraphone (with a MXL V67 with phantom power on) and vocals with an Audix OM5 and in both cases, I barely get any level on the channels I decide to record on. And I mean, barely any. I'll be lucky if the meter on the channel even lights up. What am I missing?

Recording max 8 channels with a low end Dell Laptop?

No plugins or ediiting needed, I plan to transfer recorded tracks to my home PC DAW for editing. I simply want something mobile to record 8 tracks max at 44.1/24bit (for drums, guitar, bass)

Can you get away with 256 Meg, less than 7200rpm harddrive, and 400 FSB? A low end Inspiron 6000 Dell selling now for around $600.

Or am I being too much of a tightwad ? :)

PreSonus Firepod, CH 3-8 LOW ! Help!

My newly puchased Firepod works pretty great with 1 and 2 channel, but from channel 3 to 8 it feels like the preamp is totally missing. I thought when i bought the Firepod, like it is showed on PreSonus' website, that you only need your Firepod, your mic's + cables to record fx. drums directly into the application without any extra hardware such as preamps, but i guess I was wrong ?
