When I was looking at monitors and mixers today I saw "powered" and "unpowered". what's the difference between the two? I'm pretty sure it's obvious but just to make sure can someone please explain.

I'm using Garageband v 5.1, with Addictive Drums for drums; here's the process I got through with the drums:

Create an Addictive Drums software track [MIDI], program the track, and then export MIDI track to iTunes to create an audio file.

Import the created audio file, mix said audio file.

When is someone allowed to call themselves a Mastering, or Mixing engineer?

Are there certain college requirements, or a degree?

What about people that taught themselves, reading, studying, putting in the manhours?

I know there are people out there, that didn't go to school for Music Production, Mixing, or Mastering. .
Yet, they are great at what they do. .

I've notice some bands have different masters just for their myspace profiles. Does anyone have any tips/specific ways to master your tunes for the best possibly playback after myspace compression?

I have a good solid mix of a few tunes that are now ready for BASIC 'mastering'.

I will be doing the mastering on the Waves "broadcast and production" package. I believe I have all the plugins I need for a solid mastering chain, to at least bring my mixes "up to spec" (volume similar to 'radio-ready commercial recordings, spatial fatness, etc).

This is a highly unusual request, but I'm hoping someone out there could find it in their heart to help me once I explain the sad circumstances...
