tweaking synth-piano

Hey there,

I'm mixing a singer-songwriter track that was recorded at another facility. The whole piece is voice, guitar, and piano. The voice and guitar sound great and were recorded well. The piano, however, was apparently played off of an inexpensive Yamaha synth and, well, it sounds like it. Unfortunately, the piano is also the dominant instrument in the song.

Digital Piano / Synth

I'm looking into purchasing a digital piano or synthesizer in the $300.00 - $400.00 (max) price range. I'm looking for something that has a quality piano sound and something that has quality string sounds. I know this probably sounds impossible at this price range but any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

Singers + piano

Dear masters, I come again to seek your advise. I'm approaching two new situations.

1) Soprano + alto + piano. They are trained and capable singers. The place will be a stone church, reverberant, not very large (ca 12 x 25m). I've never recorded so few singers before... I have access to omni, cardiod, and switchable pattern mics of reasonable to good quality.

Micing a Bosendorfer grand...pendelum MDP1 or Grace 201?

I am a prosumer recordist sticking my toe in the sacred waters of real deal gear. I want to upgrade my fathers recording setup. He is a quite successful artist producing solo piano CDs. cocktailpiano.com

records his elegant playing on a bosendorfer 7 ft grand with a RODE nt1 a senny 421 through about a 350 ART preamp.

obviously time for a step up.

has anyone tried this mic technique on piano?

Modern Jazz/Rock Ballad Place the mics in a 45 degree angle, one facing the keyboard and one facing the other end of the piano. The microphones can be from 6" to 3' apart, but if you spread them out you should decrease the angle. The mics should be about halfway between the strings and the lid (the lid should be all the way up), 6-12 inches inside the harp.
