Opinions need. .
I would like some of your views on the [Focusrite Platinum Voicemaster Pro] and the Focusrite Trakmaster.
How do they differ (pres, comp) etc.
Also how would you compare the pre's in the Voicemaster to the grace design. I have the grace for vocals, and I hear that they are really good for acoustic and other instruments, but I haven't really heard of any high points on Vocals. I haven't really got a chance to hear an Avalon or Great River or even a Voicemaster, so I was wonder what type of move I should make...keep the grace, sell it on ebay, and get a strip like the voicemaster or something better?

The 166 isn't dbx's best work. They are OK for live sound, but not as quiet as some other comps. You might hook it up and see how YOU like it. The reason I recommended the P1 was threefold:
A) The preamp may be "chip-based", but it sounds pretty good to me,
B) The dynamics section is GREAT, especially with the way the downward expander operates, and,
C) The A/D conversion is built right in and sounds PDG to me, too.
And don't, I repeat, DON'T confuse the downward expander with the half-assed gate on the 166!

Yeah, I be the dumbass. The P1 is actually my partners' and I thought it had a S/PDIF output after the limiter. He has it hooked up to a Tascam DM, I could swear that it was a digital connect all the way through. I was wrong! Maybe that's why I thought it sounded so good...

I have one but only use it for scratch if I run out of pres when doing a full band. Not a bad pre, but I not have found it to give a pro sound either. But then again I have heard stuff that everything was done through it and sounded ok to me. If you have great pres now you will hear the difference. If you don't have any good pres then it might serve you well.

IMHO it is over-hyped Chinese product riding on the Focusrite name.I bought a Voicemaster, but sent it right back and got a Safesound P1, which was a big improvement. Anyway, the Grace (I have a 101, too) is a real gem anytime you need a clean, quiet pre. Frankly, if you want to make your 101 more "voice-friendly", you might add a compressor to it (the RNC comes to mind)...In fact, you might check out the Safesound....not as pretty and flashy, but it certainly holds its own sonically.
