Hello everyone,

I have been using Pro Tools and m audio gear now for a few years and I'm having serious issues with the firewire/Pro Tools m powered setup since leopard on Mac OSX came out.

I'm completely frustrated and I want to simplify my gear.

I still want to use my computer for things like Live/Reason/Guitar Rig 3 and VST's however when It comes to recording guitars/basses and so forth I wanted to know if there is a simple Digital recording device that I can record instruments into and then hook it to my computer via usb/firewire and bounce my Reason/live files into the digital recorder and skip having to use Pro Tools?

Any tips and gear suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

You can always skip PT. Your FW410 will work with any DAW out there, not just PT. I've used it many times with Tracktion, Audition, Reaper, and even PT. I don't like the FW410 sonically but there you are.

A simple device like the Zoom H4n will not be without it's frustrations.

Generally I advise folks to avoid the bottom strata of "recording" gear.

Hi John,

Thanks for the tips.

I have no problems with pro tools per se. Its the 410 that's giving me the issues.

I just found out that its due to a faulty chipset that these are no longer sold by M-Audio (from what Sweet Water sound tells me).

I had the 410 for the last few years without issue UNTIL I upgraded my Mac OSX to Leopard (only essential updates), Pro tools m powered from 7.0-8.0, and the same old 410.

Ever since then the unit went from working to becoming a liability.

So I know that because its M-powered pro tools I have to have an M-audio unit.

I'm just weary of ponying up another $400 for a unit that may equally piss me off and keep me from creating.

Thanks

If the FW410 mostly worked for you then you might consider the Profire 610 or 2626. I haven't used either but they are supposed to be an improvement on the FW series.

Your big issue is that as long as you are using PT you will need a dongle. You might as well have one that helps you a little.

They are cheaper on eBay if you are a hawk.
