History - I bought a Studio Logic midi keyboard thinking it would actually produce sounds without any other hardware. I think I got it confused with another keyboard I was looking at. Anyway, my 1st goal is to learn reading music through the use of keys. I plan on recording my own music eventually. Right now I have the Studio Logic 88 key, Tascam US-144 with Cubase LE 4, and M audio monitors. I'm sure all are hooked up correctly. Cubase recognizes when I hit a key. So to reach my first goal I want to be able to get a piano sound from my midi controller. I got some CVPiano software with the Tascam if that will help. I just don't know how to get sound. I reading about midi in the manuals it seems I may need a midi or sound module as well.
Here's how I have it hooked up. The midi controller going into MIDI Input on Tascam. Outputs going to M Audio monitors. Tascam USBed into laptop which Cubase is installed. I plan on eventually getting through all the manuals but while I'm doing that I want to also start learning music with the use of the keyboard. Thanks again for your help!

In Cubase you need to set up a new MIDI track. Set up the Tasca
In Cubase you need to set up a new MIDI track. Set up the Tascam as the input for the MIDI track...although that may be automatic. You said that Cubase is recognizing the MIDI data so you are probably set there.
The next thing you need to do is set up a VST instrument in Cubase. Click on Devices and VST Instruments. Now, I don't know if you have any installed, although Cubase comes with some default ones. For now, just pick one and select it.
Now go back to your MIDI track and change the output from whatever it is to your VST instrument.
NOW, when you play your keyboard, you should hear the VST instrument playing the notes.
Thems the basics. Let us know if you get stuck.

Thank you both for the great tutorial. A few issues along the way. In response to pr0gr4m: There was no option for VST Instruments but got there another way. Was able to load VST package that came with Cubase LE 4. However, after reading multiple threads from many sites I still could get no sound while playing then eventually tried recording the track and then playing back and got sound. That's a great leap for me! However, I want to get this sound in real time. I'm not at the recording stage yet and even if I was I still would want to hear the sound while playing, duh! Can someone tell me what I am missing?

You'll need to go Midi -> Tascam -> Cubase -> Tascam -> monitors

Cubase will take the key hits and assign them a sound from whatever intrument you are using then output them to the Tascam then to the monitors.
Get reading those manuals to figure out how to get virtual instruments working and whatnot.
