For normal recreational listening, are there any advantages/disadvantages to listening through speakers versus monitors.
From what I understand normal stereo speakers color the sound in pleasurable ways, to make the sound more warm and fuzzy. Also, aren't monitors are designed to provide clarity, even sounds across the spectrum?
My initial guess that listening through monitors may not be as exciting, but trains your ears to what recorded music 'should' sound like. Any merit to that idea?

Home speakers are indeed designed to give you a smoother hearing experience. Even mediocre productions can be listened to without their shortcommings being unveiled too much. Studio monitors are revealing it all ( at least the good ones do ). This can be annoying, at times.
On the contrary, listening through monitors is exciting. Listening to Mr. Niceguy home speakers is besoothing and keeps consumers happy. But, I would not like to run Monitors back home, when I am off duty..lol...
What I like to do is watching DVD movies with great surround audio works in the studio. It is amazing how much good audio gives those films. And audio mistakes are much more noticable than the usual small picture flaws.

It's all watcha like man. I have a Bose surround system in my living room, and Mackie HR monitoring system in my recording room. I love hearing my favorite records through both. The cool bass boost in the living room is super enjoyable, and the pristine 'stuff i didn't hear before' through my monitors is fantastic. For headphones, i will pick a side, and vote a pair of 240's for fun and work! They just give me a better listening experience than any others i've heard so far. Looks like big k's entertainment speakers are the stuff!!!!! Whew!

Good monitors can be harsh reality. On the other hand, if the music or movie you are listening/watching was done well the aural experience will still be pleasurable. I like my monitors and would listen to anything on them. I hate high end bump (so called sheen from advertising) so most home theater speakers make me want to practice my IDPA skills. I think ultimately it is whatever you like to hear. There isn't a rule about it.
