Power Monitors provide bi amp amplification of the speakers where using a single Hafler P3000 would not. Given that alone, if the choice is to be made, going with the powered speakers is the better way. .... Fats

I think for the money, I would skip the Mackies. There are other.... less controversial speakers in the price range :p

So biamping does give you a noticebly better reproduction. Something to keep in mind.

It is important to find a good match between amp and speaker. When buying good high end powered speakers this is essentially already done for you.

I just received my first set of powered speakers I ever owned yesterday. I cried and had goosebumps for the rest of the night. Powered and passive speakers are night and day, the manufacturers do a great job of matching the amp with the transducer. I would say powered is the way to go, I've had passive monitors for years and nothing comes close to my experience last night, I was totally blown away....
