Anyone use them? I'm looking into getting one as a portable interface, and was wondering if the pre's are even halfway decent.

I know they're not going to be API's or Great River's, but are they useable? Mostly I'll be using them to track rock drums on location, at least until I can get some more money scrounged together for some other pre's.

I ran a search and didn't come up with much more than they're "clean type pres"

I have the MOTU 896HD. I also have a Soundcraft Ghost that I use the pres on as well. I would say that they both fall into that "not great but usable for the money" department. You would have to make a big price jump to get much better per channel. I actually like them more than my Ghost (it's never been modded). Getting something along the lines of a Presonus or ART pre would yeild no improvement in most situations, IMHO. Also I think the conversion sounds a lot nicer than previous MOTU firewire offerings. It's a HUGE step up from my PCI based 2408 MkI too. I'm glad I bought the 896HD.
