Or perhaps more precisely, a LACK of certain needs. I only need 2 channels. I won't be recording anything more than guitars and vocals (everything else will be done elsewhere). I'm using PC, Cubase, and the PC is quite good (Core 2 Duo, enough RAM).

(1) Above all, it's got to sound great. So if I need to buy extra channels to get an awesome sounding unit, then so be it. So I need killer converters and hopefully killer mic preamp's (though I'm sure I'll have to skimp on one of these at my budget).

(2) I'd like to stay under $1000.

(3) Preferably there'd be something about the unit (say, the converter) than I could still use down the road if I decide to upgrade into the big time money.

(EDIT: Also, if I decided to not get the Fireface 400 and got the Mackie Onyx + some mics instead, would there be anything in the Mackie that I could use in a few years, when I upgraded all my stuff? Are the pre's THAT good, or only very good "for the money", or only good "for live")

Thanks,
mark

To be honest, I've not heard the Fireface. I know only of its reputation here and elsewhere.

I chose Presonus Firepod quite a while ago based upon price, positive reviews, and a short trial. I liked it well enough to keep it (Firepod), and get a 2nd one, along with a Presonus Central Station. Then sold all 3 and got a Firestudio, a Focusrite 428, and a vintage Ampex 354 tube 2 channel mic pre, all of which give me a nice variety of choices. I needed the FS for its S/MUX connections to run the 428 through, and firewire to/from the computer.

If you can, listen to both at the same store, with material you are familiar with, through familiar monitor speakers and let your ears decide.

I would actually consider the pres in the fireface 400 to be at least on the quality of the FMR or better. I've got to give RME credit - the pres are nice. Very nice.

The conversion is top notch too.

IMO, for "top notch" quality under $1000, there is no better solution. It will definitely allow you to grow later in life too.
