Great Mic...X/Y is great as well.
There are many paths to success. I don't know why I don't x/y...other than my personal taste. I always seem to do spaced...no plan. I try to approach each situation as new and unique. Perposelly trying differrent things..yet sometimes I run out of time, and with downbeat looming I'll quicky fall back to a tried and true for me. Stereo mics are great. Simple, close to point source so phase isn't an issue, and only one mic stand so they "fit in there" really well. C24's , 69fet, etc....can't co wrong...also great for M/S.

Ok Thanks! I used the SM 69 for my last drum recording and I had a better stereo image than the "normal" way.
I got the preamp for this mic too and it's very easy to get a good loudness level without overloads. I seems to me that there's a comp/limiter inside.
The mic sounds good. You know, it's not the cheapest.

Neumann...not cheap,but consitently great sounding

Would anyone ever mic Cymbals? It kind of sounds dumb, but I don't know.

my OH (Over Head) mic's capture the cymbals...but I usually alos have a mic on the snare and one on the ride in addtition. My OH's tend to capture the whole kit. Some people mic the OH's where they really are more symbal mics .

I use two At4050´s for the overheads. Bith Cardioid, with low cut and gain reduction/pad on.
I´m afraid at omni shpuld pick up to much room.
What are your opinions?
I use:
Kick > Sm91
Snare top > Beta 57, c418 (noisy but bright)
Snare side > Beta 57
Snare bottom > fed up with their "broken sound"
Toms > C2000B, C300b, gt55 ( yes, very fat sound)
Overs > At4050´s
Hi-hat > At4050, C3000B ( padded, low cut in)

I never use beat detective, just a few quick edits and maybe 2 or 3 punch-ins.

Sometimes, an aux triggered sampled snare if needed, if dynamics are an issue as well as serious leakage.

Omni on OH's? A unique situation could always present itself where that would be valid...but in general, cardiod is the ticket. Figure-8 (as w/ribbons...ala R121's) seems to be as "open" as I want on OH's. A real dead, big space would be a time to try omni....still, if you haven't heard it, listen to them in omni and then you'll have "your" answer.
Also...try without the pad and roll off....pads are used (like eq) maybe a little too much, and they really can suck the life out of a great mic.
Try the 'ol speaker for an outside kick mic (it's all the rage right noe)...it is deaf to hi freq's so it handles vleed without a blanket...and it gives you the real big modern sub sounding kick without any extra eq.
I LOVE beat detective. Once you get it's nack it really works well...much better than auto-tune ever has.

I am not a big fan of kick drum ghost sound at the over heads. That is why I low cut it and atenuate both overs. some guys bring huge cymbals and room height is not like a castle -lol
