Hi! I'm new here and as of now am primarily here looking for advice on new gear.
What I'm looking to find is a field recorder. My current aI'm is for something under $400 (CAN). What I'm looking for is something with very basic EQ and gain controls, two XLR inputs with phantom power, and something that writes to SD Cards (Although compact flash is fine too, but god knows I'm already swimming in class 10 SD Cards)
I've been looking at the FR-2 LE but it's a fair way out of my price range, but I want something of a similar idea.
The purpose for this is I'm working on some indie film, and need a low budget system for getting good quality audio. I've already got everything else I need from my personal studio work, I just need a unit for field recording.

No, I had seen a couple of the other Zoom field recorders but not this one. Just read a couple of reviews on it and seems very impressing, and here it fits nicely in my price range, thanks! Definitely going at the top of my list!

How do you know? According to your only other post on these forums to date, you have just got the Sony unit and have not used it yet.
The original poster is looking for a portable recorder that has a pair of XLR mic inputs capable of supplying 48V phantom power. The PCM-M10 is a nice little recorder for what it is designed to do, but it does not have XLR mic inputs and therefore does not have 48V PP available.

I have used the Zoom H2 for over a year with amazing results. Whether it is some acoustic guitars or a full-out amped jam, the Zoom recorded well. I imagine the H4 is as good or better. Tascam makes a small recorder too...... like a DR series, some only have the 1/8 inch inputs however, but compares closely with the Zoom for quality.

I use the zoom h4n in my line of work (sound engineer all the way to nature recording) and i would go for the zoom. theirs nothing better for the price and is extremely adaptive, just try not to drop it as the mics at the top aren't too sturdy (but that's pretty obvious) Theres no bias to this decision i go for what works and the h4n just does.
Im actually a tascam dr-100 owner but am now trying to sell it to get a zoom because they are just the most adaptive device
