I'm a small indie film director, directing/producing my own film. I currently have an Audio-Technica AT4071A because I got a great deal on it a while back. But for my next film I'm upgrading to a two mic setup. And I'm considering getting either another Audio-Technica or Sennheiser MKH-416, MKH-60, or MKH-70. I know the MKH-416 is basically an industry standard, but I have to question why isn't the MKH-60 better? The Sennheiser MKH-60 has a Signal-to-Noise Ratio of 88 dB. Where the MKH-416 is 81dB, that's actually lower than the Audio-Technica AT4071A at 82dB. Obvsiouly I have no experience with the Sennheisers. Maybe some have stronger directionality or something. But if I'd have to say I'd think the Sennheiser MKH-60 would be the way to go. Could people please explain to me what I don't understand?

I have both mics, MKH416 as well as MKH60.
Sennheiser made the MKH60 as a replacement/upgrade for the 416, but it was different. 416 just a bit more directional but the 60.... 60 has more natural off axis sound. Both are excellent.
If you are booming 2-3 people at a time, 60 is more forgiving.
Adjustable pad, HPF and HF boost on 60 is nice.
You can't go wrong with either....and your AT is good as well.
In the end while watching a movie, can you really tell which mic was used?
I can't.
